The Testimony

The story behind the song

"Higher" starts where survival ends. The song opens almost spoken, like a realization arriving in real time: "I used to think surviving was enough… but God didn't bring me through all of that to leave me where He found me."

Then it reframes everything the hard seasons meant: the weight, the doors that didn't open, the fire — "every place I thought was ending was a stairway I couldn't tell." Disappointment becomes vision. Every no refines the yes. The mountain becomes the place you learn to climb.

"I didn't survive all this to stay the same."

By the bridge she's naming everything the climb rises above — fear, doubt, shame, the past — while the choir builds underneath her, until the whole song is doing what it's about. It's the sound of being lifted, from the album about the space between who you were and who you're called to be: Still Becoming.

Intro — spoken

I used to think surviving was enough.
Just make it through.
Just get back to where I was.
But God didn't bring me through all of that
To leave me where He found me.

Verse 1

I wore the weight like it was mine
Carried fear for far too long
Every door that didn't open
Made me question where I belonged
I thought the pressure came to break me
Thought the fire meant I'd failed
But every place I thought was ending
Was a stairway I couldn't tell

Pre-Chorus

Now I see it different
Every tear had something to teach
What was trying to pull me under
Put a new strength underneath

Chorus

I'm going higher
I didn't survive all this to stay the same
Higher
I can hear heaven calling my name
Pain had me low
Fear had me frozen
But grace kept a door to tomorrow open
I'm not going back to who I was
God is calling me higher

Verse 2

I don't hate the road behind me
It introduced me to my faith
I found out what couldn't hold me
I found power in the wait
Disappointment gave me vision
Every no refined my yes
What I called a season wasted
God was using for my name

Pre-Chorus

So I won't curse the mountain
I learned how to climb right there
And I won't fear the valley
I found out You meet me there

Chorus

I'm going higher
I didn't survive all this to stay the same
Higher
I can hear heaven calling my name
Pain had me low
Fear had me frozen
But grace kept a door to tomorrow open
I'm not going back to who I was
God is calling me higher

Bridge

Higher than the fear
Higher than the doubt
Higher than the voice
That tried to count me out
Higher than the shame
Higher than the past
If You brought me through the fire
I know this won't be where I last
I had to lose some things
To learn what couldn't leave
Had to walk through empty rooms
To know what I believe
Every scar became a window
Every wound became a sign
I wasn't being buried
I was learning how to rise

Choir Build

Higher, higher
Take me higher
Higher, higher
I'm going higher

Lead Ad-Libs

No, I can't stay here
I've seen too much grace
I've come too far
To keep living in the same place
My mind is going higher
My faith is going higher
My life is going higher
Everything connected to me, higher

Final Chorus

I'm going higher
I didn't survive all this to stay the same
Higher
I can hear heaven calling my name
What tried to break me
Only prepared me
For everything You already declared me
I'm not going back to who I was
God is calling me higher

Outro — spoken

The pressure wasn't punishment.
The waiting wasn't wasted.
I wasn't going under.
I was being lifted.
Higher.
